Shadow on Concrete Wall

Jotting down key takeaways from books that i read which have helped me shape my career in Software engineering (product management, data analytics) ...here

The Master Algorithm

Analogy to farming made easier understanding : data-soil, learning algorithms-seeds, machine learning expert-farmer, learned programs-grown plants. Concepts like "Accuracy to believe in" (high-low bias, high-low variance), how brain learns into neural network (reinforcement), cause/effect into Bayesian algo were interesting

Story Telling with Data

Whole concept of presenting data in a dynamic way (using Tableau) and building a story line around the "problem statement" is well described.

The Speed of Trust

Open and transparent communication is the key to build trust

Increased Trust = Increased Speed and Less Cost

Simply put, trust means confidence. The opposite of trust—distrust—is suspicion.

Strategy*Execution = Results, SE=R but hidden variable is Trust i.e. SE*T =R

A company can have an excellent strategy and a strong ability to execute, but the net result can be either torpedoed by a low-trust tax or multiplied by a high-trust dividend

Continuous Discovery Habits

- Focus on outcomes rather than outputs for product success (drive business results)

- Setting a team's outcome should be a 2 way negotiation between Product Leader and product trio (Product Manager, Designer, SW Engineer)

- Deliver value every sprint by addressing unmet needs, resolving pain points and satisfying desires

- Digital product is never done and the opportunity space is never finite or complete

- Social loafing : People tend to work harder when working individually than in groups

Catalyst

Target, Measure, Review and Reflection (TMRR) model – the most effective learning model at work. Are your converting your time to experience?

   Leadership = function (Position,Content,Values)

   L = (P+C) * V

   A good job, hard work, IQ, EQ, good communication skills – these are all ingredients for a successful life. The presence of these elements alone, however, does not guarantee success. To convert them into long-term success, you need certain stimuli which precipitate or accelerate your growth.

The Diamond Cutter

Key take away : No experience of any kind ever happens unless the imprint that triggers it has been planted first.Once an imprint is planted in the mind, it must lead to an experience: no imprint is ever wasted. Apply to business, one of my favorite is :

"You find yourself unable to concentrate or keep your mind focused when faced with a challenging business situation or decision"

Solution:

  • Spend some time each day putting your mind, peacefully and in a concentrated way, on the larger questions of life.

  • Would you be doing right now what you are doing right now if you knew you were going to die tonight? Step back and look at your life, and at what’s important. The imprint from spending some time this way every day comes up into the conscious mind as a fierce ability to concentrate.
